Liam

Liam’s background / Liam

Toya:Thanks for your help today! So, I would like to ask you about the way you teach “language” at home. By the way, How long have you been in Japan?

Liam’s Dad : I’ve been in Japan for twenty two years, I came over 2000. And I’ve been teaching English at university and here in Senrikinran Saturday School.
Liam was born and raised in Osaka, so he has never lived in other countries. But sometimes we go to England which is where my home town is.

Toya : Such a quite long time you’ve been in Japan! Liam has been trying to work hard in the lesson, how long has he been playing soccer?

Liam’s Dad : I think we started to play a little bit before we joined this class. We used to go to the park and kick the ball around. But he didn’t usually play with other children so this is a good opportunity, a good chance, although he sometimes plays with some friends from school he goes to.

Toya : What about you? Did you used to play football back ground?

Liam’s Dad : Of course, we played football a lot in England. we just kicked the ball around at school or parks, football is the main sports in England. Than’s why I used to play.

Things to do at home /

Toya : How do you communicate with each other at home? What language do you use mainly?

Liam’s Dad : Usually we speak together in English at home. When we together, whole family, my wife and Liam often speak English. sometimes my wife and Liam speak in Japanese but basically we try to keep speaking English.

Toya : Liam has to try to switch English and Japanese on and off, home and school.

Liam’s Dad : Because he is surrounded by Japanese environment outside, so it’s important to have an opportunity to use English at home. If you can improve the ratio of using English, that would be good for learning English, try to keep balance to some extent.

Reasons why Liam speaks two languages / Liam

Toya : Liam speaks two languages, English and Japanese. How do you educate him at home when it comes to language education?

Liam’s Dad : To learn English, I think there are some main things. One, kids need to have plenty of chance of listening to English to be able to speak English. If you know somebody who can speak English and kids have a lot of chances to practice with them, that would be great. and also it’s important to have a teacher to let kids learn English.

Toya : It goes hand in hand with your input and your output, right?

Liam’s Dad : Right, and learning from books is also important but you need the chance to use that as well. So, that’s why this class is a good opportunity to learn English. Kids can learn English while doing something they enjoy. They can connect language learning with enjoyment, it’s definitely going well.

Message to all parents who are interested in English education /

Toya : Many parents are struggling with raising kids in an English environment. From your perspectives, what kind of advice would you give to them?

Liam’s Dad : I think if you can do things which help to make an English environment, that would be good. For example, if you have an English book, you can read simple English with kids. It’ll definitely be helpful for them.
And if you can find people to interact with, in English, it’s always good.
I think it’s a good idea if you have networks of people who can speak English.
